Tropical Escapism

This is my first art exhibit for 2018. A group exhibit in Cebu City Philippines hosted by 856 Gallery which was participated by both local and international artists. This year's theme was entitled 'Tropical Escapism'. From the organizers words themselves:
"Examining the stereotypical western gaze towards the tropics as a place that people escape to. The concept of the "tiki bar," where stepping into the "tiki bar" transports you away from your present spatial reality. Conversely, there is the notion of escaping from the tropics to find economic "paradise" in the West. Inspired by the tropicalia movement in Brazil during the 60's and 70's we seek similar goals of producing ideas, theories, and aesthetics that allow us to claim our interpretations of tropical."

As an overseas Filipino worker, my tropical escape has a different perspective. Here is my take on the theme:

Magic Carpet Ride
(artwork title)

If I have a magic lamp which could grant me any wish I want, you'd expect me to wish for unimaginable wealth and riches, all the money in the world and never have to worry about tomorrow or work for a single cent... just like most people would probably go for. But fantasies are fantasies unless you want to live in them and make a reality of your own. Lured by the promise of a golden future, shimmering castles, and a genie in a bottle I jumped into a magic carpet ride to the land of the desert. It was my ticket to achieving every Filipinos dream: an escape to poverty. But as mysterious as a genie in a bottle may sound my future held just as much. Golden veils cover not just the women's faces, the walls and the floors of this mysterious land but it  does the same to the window of opportunity that I took a chance upon. I had a glimpse of that future, I lived  it somehow but sometimes, the wind takes us somewhere else, where reality awaits and an unexpected future lies beneath. I am still gliding in this magic carpet ride in my very own tropical escape.

My Online STORE!

ANNOUNCING MY ONLINE STORE!!! It's kind of late to announce it here coz I've already posted about it on my other social media platforms. Hehe Nevertheless, I wanted to blog it (maybe in length, or not) for there may be other people who can read this here and not on the other platforms.

Anyhooo, it's been a long time dream to have my own shop online and even to have a physical one. It's still a working progress though and there are still so much to do and to change, some things are a bit temporary in terms of design in the website but some of the products are already posted. Most of what I have posted are the latest ones I did that I also sold during the Bahrain comic con. There are more products I need to upload and planning to branch into. So much work to do, who would've thought! :D

Here are some of the mugs that are already up on the store.

STRANGER THINGS COFFEE MUG

GAME OF THRONES COFFEE MUGS

As of the moment, this is what my store looks like. Like I said, there are tons of work to be done while juggling some mommy duties. So, I'm just taking things one at a time but I'm sure glad I finally took the first step. :)

I sure do hope you visit my store! ---> https://uniquelikeeveryoneelse.com/

Bahrain Comicon

Last month I participated in an event here Bahrain, selling my artworks and some merchandise. The Bahrain Comic Con was its first time in the country and it was well received by the public by the number of its visitors and from my point of view. It has been a while since I joined an event like this, four years ago I was in Dubai Comic Con, it sure does help to have a bit of an experience with such events. I made sure I was a little more prepared with my merchandise and the logistics. Fortunately the organizers did a very good job organizing the whole event, it was smooth and us the vendors were well taken taken of making everything just a whole lot of fun experience!

And of course, the kids had to join the whole fun too! :)

Here are some of the artworks I sold at the event.

Daenerys  | Some cast of Season 8 (poster)

Jon Snow  | Night King

Liv of iZombie | 13 Reasons Why

Claire and Jamie of Outlander

Stranger Things
(my most selling fan art works!!)

Grendizer (Bahraini) :D

If you are interested to buy some of these artworks just head on over to my shop! Although it's still a working progress and I'm still have to upload more artworks, you can already find a few in the shop.

Thanks!

Motherhood illustrations

Since motherhood has taken over my life, i can't help making an illustrated version of my my daily adventures. I haven't done a lot, i wish i could put all my experiences and misadventures into a comic strip but then again i wish i could do many things since my hands are always tied and my time is not mine anymore.

LET ME DO MY BROW, SON! | 2015
As much as i prioritize my child, i can't let my brow game get the back seat. It's the most that i could do for myself including taking a quick shower and keeping myself sane. Never mind all the mess around the house, dirty diapers lying around, dirty clothes piling up and of course, running late for work-- kilay is still life! :D

CAN MAMA CONTOUR HER FACE FIRST? | 2016
Shortly after my first child, the second baby came along and my makeup game has also upped its ante-- this time i was into contouring! Hah! With two babies, i really tried to squeeze in this part of my routine which was a bit hard. Although this time we already have a nanny but having two babies and at the time I was working, it was still a mess. But i do my best to get that 'time for myself'--and contouring was lifer!

ME AND THE BOYS WHEN GOING OUT | 2017
It's 2017 when we moved to Bahrain and we we're nannyless- life started to become a bit more challenging than usual. My boys were becoming toddlers and hyperactive. I could not have imagined myself being where I am now, but hey that's life! One of the things that i am proud of myself is going out alone with the kids, they can be a handful and i am able to keep myself sane and calm but i'm actually dying inside! But once i am able to strap them in the car going home and everyone is in one piece then my day is done.

Motherhood will always bring me ups and downs, more subject to draw and more reason to do what i do. It's fun, it's exhilarating and most times exhausting that's why i need more coffee!

THANKS!

I'M BACK!

SOOOOOO.... it's been forever since my last post and a lot of things have happened and changed. This is not going to be a lengthy post, just a little welcome back for myself. It feels like riding a bicycle again after a while, picking up my balance, rediscovering the old stuff, things like that. I hope I still have some readers around here.

Wonder Mama

SO i'm a mother of two toddlers now and a full-time stay-at-home mom. I accept freelance project when I can, because I don't really have so much time. But I still do the stuff I love to do. I will probably post some photos of my kids (if I can't help it)! hehe

I will be posting some of my old projects from the newspaper and some stuff that I have been doing. Not a lot but I'm hoping to be more productive this year.

Welcome back to my blog guys... whoever is reading this now!

THANKS!

The Saga: Mayweather Jr. Vs Pacquiao

May 2, 2015 THE DAY! The Mayweather and Pacquaio fight of the century, i cannot miss this fight and of course we at the newspaper cannot let this pass without a hype. My Chris Ware-inspired page is the first to come out in the series of graphics that Times of Oman is going to publish.

If you are unfamiliar with the drama behind this fight, I hope this graphic can enlighten you to the soap-opera-like of boxing. One of the reason why this is a match to watch is because it  has been dragging for years with a lot of bickering, drama and suspense for both parties. It's about time this should already happen.

This comic type graphic is a timeline of the prolonged boxing negotiations.

It all started in 2007

Pacquaio, Mayweather and The Great Mills Lane

The people behind the two superstars
These people are the ones  who ought to be credited for making this fight a reality. They are as important as the two superstars from the marketing hand to the boxer's trainers.

Did I miss out on anything?? Let me know. :)

THANKS!

The Colombian Hottie, James

The day after Colombian midfielder made headlines with his World Cup 5-goal record we made an article about the new 22 year old sensation James Rodriguez. Not to mention he is kind of a heartthrob, in my opinion and in so many other girls around the globe. He is now known as King James, more like a super hottie James. hehehe

THANKS FOR READING!

World Cup Semi-finals (a tile magazine cover)

For the World Cup semi-finals we have decided to make one artwork for the two-day match and cut them half for each day. A pretty clever idea i must say! So my task was to come up with the artwork.

As for the style of the illustration, my design director took inspiration from Cleon Peterson's works. We all agreed that it was a good direction and would definitely make sense. We wanted to a bloody battle, almost merciless. Using only limited colors representing the each teams.

And then this is what happens if you put the two magazine covers together! :)
